North West Region

Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council: 30,000 street lights are powered from certified renewable energy sources. This means that 4,627 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide will be saved each year. More than a quarter of all the electricity used by Calderdale Council is generated from certified renewable energy sources. This results in a carbon dioxide saving of around 1500 tonnes per year. The new Todmorden Sports Centre has a CHP plant. The hot water for sinks and basins at the Council offices is generated by solar panels. http://www.calderdale.gov.uk

Kirklees Metropolitan Council: £170,000 to be invested in schemes, which include the development of sites for hydro-electricity generation, the introduction of solar plumbing in local houses and the installation of renewable energy sources in council homes. A "solar village" consisting of 30 properties will be established in the Almondsbury area of Huddersfield, while plumbers in Deswbury will be given special training to help develop their green skills. http://www.kirklees.gov.uk

Nuneaton & Bedworth Borough Council: Replacement of seven gas-fired boilers and two gas-fired water heaters, originally installed in the 1980s, with an integrated CHP system from Baxi-SenerTec, Potterton and Isis Controls. Alongside is a DACHS mini-CHP system which operates as the lead boiler for both heating and hot water, and as well as generating 12.5kW of heat, it also produces 5.5kW of electricity suitable for the town hall's base load power demand. The complete package with the four Potterton boilers offers a total of 612kW of energy. http://www.nuneatonandbedworth.gov.uk

South East Region

Eastleigh Borough Council: The Fleming Park District Energy scheme demonstrates how a local community can embrace and champion sustainable energy, and illustrates how energy linking can be utilised to deliver significant carbon reduction emissions with CHP technology. The scheme, which links one of the country’s busiest leisure centres with the Eastleigh Civic Offices, was so warmly welcomed by the local community that a Mural was designed by local school children, and hung on the energy centre to marks its poignant place in the local community. http://www.eastleigh.gov.uk

Woking Borough Council: We are at the forefront of the decentralised energy revolution in the UK. By decentralising its energy, Woking Council has slashed its energy use by nearly half, and its CO2 emissions by a massive 77 per cent since 1990. It has pioneered the development of a network of over 60 local generators, including cogeneration and tri-generation plant, photovoltaic arrays and a hydrogen fuel cell station, to power, heat and cool municipal buildings, social housing and many town centre businesses. http://www.woking.gov.uk

London Region

Wandsworth Borough Council: 42% of our electricity is from a renewable source, including all street lighting. Replacing the CHP schemes at Tooting and Putney Leisure Centres has led to substantial savings. Since 2001, all new parking meters are powered by solar. We have a renewable energy advice service available through a DTI pilot project. The telephone number is 020 8683 6683, and the service offers free information on all renewable energy technologies. http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk

Greenwich Borough Council: CHP systems were installed in 1997 with the main objective of delivering affordable heating to around 360 homes. Electricity generated by the plant is used for communal lighting system, and any excess is sold back to the national grid. Pedestrian refuges powered with carbon-free solar panels. Street lights and footpath lighting powered by mini wind turbines. Two blocks of sheltered housing have been the first in the borough to be used in a trial run of roof-top photovoltaic panels. http://www.greenwich.gov.uk

Scotland

Wales

Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council: Three Micro CHP units have been installed saving approximately 20-30 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. The CHP units, which were part funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, have each contributed to cost savings of £5,000 per year by using locally generated electricity and heat on the three local authority sites. The scheme has also contributed to the Council winning a National energy efficiency award. http://www.neath-porttalbot.gov.uk

Northern Ireland

North Down Borough Council, Bangor:  During July 2008, North Down Borough Council constructed a wind turbine in Balloo Wood (off Balloo Drive) in Bangor. The turbine stands 55m high from base to hub. The blades are 24m long. It is a significant new landmark on the Bangor skyline. The turbine will provide 'green' energy for the Council's new Waste Transfer Station on Balloo Drive and deliver energy savings of up to £150,000 per annum. http://www.northdown.gov.uk

Dungannon & South Tyrone Borough Council: Dungannon Leisure Centre is one of the most energy efficient leisure centres in Northern Ireland. A CHP plant was installed in February/March 1999, the resultant heat energy is suitable for space heating and hot water supply in the Leisure Centre. The plant converts about 30% of input energy to electricity and 50% to useful heat and overall it has an 80% efficiency. The Council has been committed to purchasing Green Electricity for fourteen sites within the area and this energy is sourced locally, namely Lendrums Wind Turbines, Fivemiletown. http://www.dungannon.gov.uk
